Monsanto and Obama: Terrorizing Our Food

Christopher Walton on 06/19/2013

Monsanto_pic2 Republican/Tea Party leadership continues to plod along daily, trying to secure political and economic victories that promote horrendous racial, gender and class divisions. The Republican/Tea Party’s destructive nature and predatory practices seek to consume every available natural resource and personal freedoms that we enjoy as Americans. Typically, Americans fight over values, politics, morals, taxes, religion, the environment, etc.. Too often we do not stop and look at how corporate America and the GOP/Tea Party link arms to profit financially at the cost of human lives. Enter Monsanto Inc.

Let’s start by looking at how the Republican backed HR 933 ProvisionMonsanto_pic2 Act (a.k.a Monsanto Protection Act!) set in motion terrifying things, that you must know about regarding what is allowed in the food, that the Republican/Tea Party’s unholy alliance with one of our largest food processing corporations in America provides.

And yes, President Obama and key Democrats are also villains in this cocktail of bad food and bad politics. Let’s start with the International Business Times’s article, ‘Monsanto Protection Act’: 5 Terrifying
Things To Know About The HR 933 Provision. In short, here are the key terrifying things that you have to know about from the article:

1) There has been remarkably little research on the subject, and even if studies find adverse health risks that could accompany the consumption of such crops, this legislation would prevent federal courts from being able to halt the sale or planting of genetically modified (GMO) and genetically engineered (GE) crops.

2) The fact that this legislation was drafted in collusion with Monsanto (by Sen. Roy Blunt, Republican of Missouri) sets an unfortunate precedent for corporations bending Congress to their will, in spite of potential public health risks for citizens. Companies can circumvent consumer safety protections if they get Congress on their side.

3) Much of Congress was unaware that the “Monsanto Protection Act” was even included in HR 933, which was a spending bill to prevent government shut-down. Andrew Kimbrell, executive director of the Center for Food Safety had this to say “In this hidden backroom deal, Sen. [Barbara] Mikulski turned her back on consumer, environmental and farmer protection in favor of corporate welfare for biotech companies such as Monsanto. This abuse of power is not the kind of leadership the public has come to expect from Sen. Mikulski or the Democrat Majority in the Senate.”

4) Obama signed HR 933 in spite of a petition against it signed byMonsanto_pic2 250,000 voters and a protest staged outside of the White House.

Are you ready for more? Let’s hear from the “good guys” in this. Opponents of genetically modified, GMO, foods worry correctly about the results of not limiting Monsanto from producing crops which may later be deemed potentially hazardous:

Who is leading the fight against Monsanto and GMOs? American farmers and food safety advocates are leading this critical fight for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of the American people:
